“We look at the world and see what we have learned to believe is there. We have been conditioned to expect… but, as photographers, we must learn to relax our beliefs…if you look very intensely and slowly, things will happen that you never dreamed of before.”

cover your mouth, a photo by J@M3S C@MPB3LL on Flickr.

I went on this trip back in July with my brother. 8 hours driving from DC to Pittsburgh to Tionesta, PA. Many childhood summer days spent up in the woods here. Around the time I entered high school, my grandfather’s cabin burnt down and I never returned again until this trip.

“Don’t Go Back to Rockville” or DGBTR is my photographic project for the fall / winter. Inspired from a Pavement song that name drops REM (Unseen Power of the Picket Fence)

The basic premise came from feeling that I am really sick of digital photography and I wanted to get back to creating photographs (not ones and zeros but actual captured light on photo-sensitive paper).

I sold my DSLR and rent now to do professional shoots when I have to. Of course, I am going to buy a DSLR again this spring, but just waiting until a full-frame sensor comes down in price and I really need it again.

For a while now, I have been using my iphone (I have a separate photo project related to that going on as well) but I really wanted to get use out of my polaroid camera collection that take Fuji FP-100c and FP-3000 instant pack films.

Here is what the project website for DGBTR I designed looks like:

dgbtr.com website designed by James Campbell

Design requirements:

  • I wanted a simple theme that displayed one image at a time and had a previous/next button accessible.
  • I also wanted it to work well on a mobile phone (but not a crappy mobile format either). I think I succeeded.

I know that cursive font goes against all the readability standards, but I like the fact that I am slowing people down to actually read what I am posting, not just info-snacking.

The font is from the amazing google font library. I highly recommend it.

Some of the photographs produced during the project are for sale in my new online store starting around $75 and up for the original polaroids. I may even offer some as limited edition signed prints of the original polaroid for those trying to save some cash.

They come matted and shipped in sturdy backed cardboard and of course signed by myself. They make great gifts.

Here are three of my favorites from the project so far (click to view details about the photos):

As always, if you have any questions about how I am processing my photography, my projects, or anything else photo or web related send me a message in the contact form. I am always busy with some project, but I will definitely get back to you in a few days.

Task 1 of the #TASKSPROJECT

The #TASKSPROJECT is a photo project that you can participate in. I will be creating these creative tasks and organizing them on instagram and flickr.

Check out all the tasks available so far: Flickr

There will be a book created after the project is over at the end of 2012 and it will feature photographs from all of those that have participated.

Enjoy.

Everyday Life

Fashion & Style

Night Scenes

Industry

Transportation

What’s your favorite category?

All photos available for use on your blog, but please ask for permission first and I can send you a copy.

Keith Lane is a photographer working in DC. He has a solo exhibit of his iphoneography project ‘iwishyouwerehere’ at the Hillyer near Dupont Circle. I had the chance to interview him and post a feature on my local dc artist focused site, InstantDC.com.

Thus ends Mikael Kennedy’s Passport to Trespass project.

There are no more polaroids that will be created because there’s no more film left to expose.

In case you are not familiar with the Passport to Trespass project, many other places on the internet have covered it better so I will not rehash old information.

I will let you know that there are two volumes of his photos available in the last two books of the series, volume 8 and 9. The catch is that there are only 100 hand-numbered versions so far. I was able to grab mine as soon as I heard they were for sale. I would grab yours before it is too late.

Review of the last 2 Volumes that are in my hands right now:

Instantly nostalgic. It reminded me of all the places that I knew growing up in Pittsburgh that I will never find again, no matter how hard I search. It is more than not being able to ever go home again, it is about wandering endlessly, a frenetic search for your own place in a world that is just out of reach. We get to witness his journey through the photographs in Passport to Trespass. By the end, a sense of peace washes over you, knowing that you are safe and sound sitting in your living room or your bedroom or your apartment, away from the confusion, frustration, and visions that occur out on the road.
